Jujube is a native species of Western and Central Asia, Afghanistan, from the south of Russia and Kazakhstan to Turkey and Iran. It is now widely established in North America as an introduced species. Sanjad is one of the seven ingredients of the Haftsin Iranian table. It has been used for making bowls, spoons and household items in the interior decoration of Iranian homes since ancient times.

The Jujube tree has a twisted trunk with brown striped skin. The outer color of the wood of this tree is yellowish white and its inner color ranges from brown to orange. The wood of this tree is odorless and tasteless and usually has parallel and sometimes hard fibers. Jujube wood has a high resistance to cold weather and the texture of this wood is also soft.
